Top 10 Reasons Why MLB Sucks

betting baseball

It let’s good hitter loose empasis on defense, and it takes away from the original nature of the game. I know the revenue sharing scam that MLB has put into place to hush up the small teams enough for them to keep a star of two, but this is out of control what these players make. The only thing that makes it bearable for a fan is they are in third place, and they haven’t had a World Series monopoly. Here are my top reasons why…

#8 No Salary Cap

This is a problem. The already thin pitching talent being spread across the league to play in empty stadiums. Or heaven forbid, my favorite argument, a picher that might be able to hit (Babe Ruth ring a bell). MLB has been slow to move on this, but some initiatives are starting to funnel money back into developing solid inner city youth baseball programs. He is the anti-christ of the purist movement. Too many prospects are being forced up too early. To me that is a player that should get to stay wherever he wants, and the MLB market should be to a point that some salary could be eatin’ by the Reds to ensure the Hall of Famer goes out exactly as he wanted to go. Too much controversey for the fair weather fan, they are probably Nascar fans now. But no the franchise players are as dead as the suicide squeeze in the MLB. There isn’t a whole lot more coaches can do to teach players to throw 100 mph. The problems are many for this little pickle the MLB has put itself in. Now we have records that are going to have undeniable question marks beside them. Pitching is relatively the same. The free agent market paired with large market clubs will snuff out any such chances of restoring that to baseball. You can find it the dictionary, but don’t look for it MLB clubhouses. Pitching is usually something you have that is innate and polished, hitting can be developed and is so more effectively in all the ametuer ranks of baseball. For a purist of the game the DH opened a window for a single tool baseball player to make it to the bigs. The double switch, the bunt, and the art of the pitcher moving a runner over. The purity of the sport is not represented at the Major League level. This is the shoot’em up Nintendo generation here that we are trying to interest in our beloved sport. I love the game.

#2 The Designated Hitter

The designated hitter was devised in 1979 by the American League to up attendance and run production…blah..blah..blah. Maybe its boring, maybe there are no role models, maybe they have no place to play? For whatever reason there has been a lost link, and it shows. They give the poor kid a cap and a prayer and send him out there to compete. There are fewer African-American playing the game of baseball today then in the 70’s. These types of players survive their MLB bootcamp with Kansas City or the Reds and then after those teams can no longer afford them they have them well groomed for the “big money franchises.” The rich get richer, the poor keep calling up rookies!

#4 Free Agency and the Death of the Franchise Player

Free agency is a curse! This has destroyed the franchise player. Your best 9 against my best 9, everybody hits!

It all goes to say, baseball has lost the interest of the African-American community. I am a teacher of the game at many different levels. Where did these types of pitchers go? The intimidators, not on roids –I might add –where are they in the league. So how does pitching get back to where it was..Let’s start a couple more expansion teams..that will fix it. They also forgot that it took away some fundamental aspects of managing. With no salary cap Major League Baseball has let a whiny bunch of babies be the face of the organization. He has publicity stunts that take the focus off the game, and puts on a show for our young adoring fans about the urgency to win, and gives them a seminar on the art of whining about losing. Granted there are some hard nosed athletes which could be considered baseball purist still around, but the Mark Graces of the World are few and far between.

#3 George Steinbrenner

Don’t get me started on this figure. Even the struggling Reds lost Ken Griffey Jr., no he is not a franchise player for Cincinnati. But without a doubt he wanted to be a Red, even though they were horrible. At least Jeff Gordon’s helmet size didn’t grow two sizes in a single season.

Counting Down the Downfall of Baseball

I am a baseball fan first and foremost. And the small teams get hit the hardest..these teams survive by calling up the next great hope from AA or AAA to fill a gap.

#1 Loss of the Inner City Development

Just when you thought I had nothing intelligent to say: The main reason that Major League Baseball is below average is because the inner cities do not produce baseball players like they have in the past. But somewhere between being a kid that loves the game and being an adult who gets paid to play the game a transformation happens. Baseball hasn’t been able to appeal to elite African-American atheletes. The small market teams will never hold onto a franchise player, and this hurts the fanbase. Hitters have developed, even without the use of human growth hormones, the art of hitting a round ball with a round stick squarely has become a science.

#10-The players are overpaid. Contemporary craziness is Pete Rose betting on baseball, strikes, and now the “roid rage.” There are just too many factors to list! It just well…sucks! The game has been tarnished in so many ways. This of course helps prepare them for free agency. Spice it up a little bit, if Golf can up their ratings due to Tiger and a few dicy commentators..what is MLB or the broadcast networks doing to change it up?

#9 Too Many Tampered Seasons

This blemish dates all the way back to the Sox throwing the World Series. He put up Hall of Fame numbers while in Seattle. This is what happens without a salary cap. . The head of the Yankee player monopoly will pout until he wins another World Series. League expansion is a cluster of uncanny proportions. ratings are falling because people would rather watch people drive around in a circle at high rates of speed then listen to another has-been drooling all over the microphone about baseball. Baseball has a unique dynamic that is referred to as chemistry, and it isn’t for sale!

#7 No Parity in the League

Parity is defined as:equality, as in amount, status, or character. Ole’ George will do whatever it takes to win because he loses so grasiously. It’s a joke that MLB pulled in order to do away with having pitchers go to the plate and flail out the ball in crucial parts of the game. Maybe the other 9 reasons the MLB sucks has something to do with it!

#5 Boring Commentary

The T.V.

#6 Pitching

Now that Nolan and the Goose have hung up their cleats who is left to make these lumber lugging neanderthals look retarded at the plate. I like the commentary, but it isn’t exciting television. The Yankees payroll is out of control! Lucky for us the remaining fans that talent and money doesn’t always win championships

At all levels of collegiate play, there are five things that all high school prospects should do to improve their chances of getting recruited for a football scholarship

It was the waning moments of a damp September fourth quarter, and football, as it often does, had brought out the ugly side of one of its fans. Let me preface the conversation about college cheerleading with a quick aside about cheerleading in high school.

A number of schools are considering firing their longtime successful coaches, in the hopes of getting a more successful one. Here are the five big questions to keep in mind heading into the 2015 UH Football season.

Being a Harbaugh has given him more intimate exposure to football than most coaches, but it’s what he’s learned in life, not the Harbaugh legacy, that sets Jay apart.

From a distance, it appears that Jim Harbaugh is a great coach because he is a great father, husband, son and brother, and being a great football coach just naturally follows.

Even if you aren’t into the game, football fandom isn’t just about what happens on the field anymore. This may not be technically wrong, but it’s lame.

While secondary market tickets for the College Football Championship Game are the most expensive for any college game this season, it’s on pace to be the least expensive national championship game by a wide margin.

There will always be those who ignore the wisdom of others, but if more athletes realize the impact of what a 40+ year retirement will look like, they might perk up their ears just a little more.

Without governance reforms that will put the players’ education and safety ahead of the coaches’ and schools’ money-making priorities, the academically elite Division I colleges’ claim to a higher ground is pure hypocrisy.

Rocky Marciano – InfoBarrel

betting baseball

The 1963 issue of Boxing Illustrated claimed: “Marciano’s knockout blow packs more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet and represents as much energy as would be required to spot lift 1000 pounds one foot off the ground.”  Although this sort of ‘science’ was probably conducted by zealous Marciano fans, it is undeniably true that Rocky hit really hard.)

After knocking out an old Joe Louis, Rocky got a title shot. Before the fight Marciano met with a priest, who after their meeting said: “That boy is no ordinary prizefighter, he is one of the most dignified, straightforward people I have ever met in my life. Walcott collapsed to the canvas and was counted out. He would interrupt his training schedule to attend Mass. They all lived in a two bedroom apartment. He would never be a classic boxer, but he worked unceasingly at improving his craft, and trained relentlessly. He golfed with priests, helped promote parish functions, even lunched with Cardinal Spellman. Life magazine called him “pure of speech” and “a clean living boy.” He was elsewhere described as “astonishingly innocent,” and “totally without deception, totally without guile.” He didn’t drink or smoke; in fact, when a host at a party for Marciano in Brockton offered the champ a drink, Rocky replied, “If you don’t mind, I’ll take an apple.”

Everett M. There would be good food, a nice check for a few words, and still enough time to fly back for his birthday. Walcott bounced off and threw a hard left hand. At the last minute Rocky decided to squeeze in an appearance at a steak house in Des Moines, Iowa. He usually didn’t pay anything for his cross-country trips: no plane fare, hotel fare, or meals. He was awkward in the ring. Although he left thousands (some claim hundred of thousands) of dollars stashed away or buried underground, none of it was found to aid Barbara and the children, who were impoverished after Rocky’s death.

He and Lena settled in Brockton, a small city twenty miles south of Boston. His wife, Barbara, was unable to have the large family Rocky wanted. Skehan, Rocky Marciano, Biography of a First Son, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1977.

Marciano was “a kind and decent man.”, He was “inherently a decent, righteous and truly wonderful guy…His innate decency and wholesomeness shine through in a dedicated glow.” Or: “We never cease to be amazed at the humility of Rocky Marciano…he treats everyone if they were the celebrity and he the awed little guy.” Another writer called him “probably the humblest of heavyweight champions.”  Said another: “He reminds you of a great, friendly collie …with the grin of a shy fellow happy to be recognized, at last, as a member of the gang in good standing.” He was “the gentlest athlete I have ever known,” and again: “a man of simplicity and sincerity.”

Marchegiano went to New York and met Al Weill, a boxing manager who tried to Americanize his name. And Brockton loved him right back, at least in part because many of them became rich betting on Rocky’s fights.

On August 31, 1969, Marciano planned to interrupt his business circuit and fly back to Florida to celebrate his forty-sixth birthday with his family. He boarded a small, single engine Cessna. He made sure the people who invited him paid for everything.

Five months after Marciano’s death “The Superfight” debuted in theaters. An obituary in his home state of Massachusetts read:

Rocky was generous with people who were down and out, often giving them unsecured loans that were rarely paid back. The famous sportswriter Jimmy Cannon observed that Marciano trained “like a man practicing a holy ritual.” Before fights he would slip away to a church or chapel to pray. His marriage was strained. Rocco inherited his father’s toughness, for he survived a deadly bout of pneumonia when he was two. Ali complained about his ‘loss’, alleging the computer was made in Alabama.

Lena prayed to St. He had no boxing skills. Marciano’s body was found pinned beneath the wreckage. Walcott’s experience kept Marciano off-balance and sometimes made him look ridiculous. She and her friends prayed the Rosary at the child’s bedside and waited. Yet he used a wire to try to get coins back he used to make telephone calls. It was an incredible run. When he wasn’t playing sports he was running and exercising.

The answer: Rocky Marciano, heavyweight boxing champion from 1952 to 1956, when at age thirty-three he retired with a perfect record (49-0, with 43 knockouts). He backed Walcott into the ropes. And he could be incredibly tight with a buck. He  hit his opponents on the break, after the bell, and below the belt. Rocco refused but eventually he tired of having his name misspelled and mispronounced, and allowed his name to be shortened to Rocky Marciano. Once he hit a man so hard he almost killed him. After the Rock retired he kept running.

As he continued to successfully defend his title, Marciano gradually drew respect from critics. Asked about his reaction when flying shrapnel hit his jaw and snapped off some teeth, Pierino replied, “I just spit them out and kept coming.”

Marciano’s character was on display in his first fight with Walcott, which was a classic. He was undersized for a heavyweight. Several opponents quit boxing after being knocked out by Marciano. A few minutes later she came out complaining: “What is he, crazy? He didn’t want anything to do with me.” Marciano seemed more comfortable in the company of clergy than actresses. Stallone credited Chuck Wepner’s losing effort in a fight with Muhammed Ali as the inspiration for the film, yet the similarities of Rocky Balboa to Rocky Marciano are numerous and obvious.

The doctor was wrong. He was invited to the White House to meet the President. Marciano stepped inside and beat Walcott to the punch with a short right hand that traveled maybe eight inches. Rocky slowly became a better boxer, but it was his punching power that kept him undefeated. Rocco’s biggest limitation was arms so short they were almost stubby. Anthony before his first title fight, read The Confessions of St. Rocky seemed too busy to be home.

Perhaps it was his simplicity that allowed him to retire after beating everyone worth fighting. She smoked too, and developed a glandular problem. Although he enjoyed being champion, Marciano remained unchanged. Then Rocky and Ali sparred 70 rounds for the camera, simulating different endings to the fight. The pilot had not flown at night before, became confused by the bad weather, and attempted to land in a field rather than the Newton airport.

Outwardly Marciano’s life after boxing was quite successful – unlike many fighters, he kept his money and his wits. Rocky never wrote anything down, he tried to keep track of his loans in his head, and sometimes forgot who owed him, and how much. Jude’s oil while in his corner waiting for the start of that fight.

Far behind on points late in the fight, Rocky needed a knockout to win. One sportswriter said Marciano brought the “austere, sackcloth-and -ashes approach of a monk” to his training. The people of the world should be informed of this boy’s character and personality.”

Marciano died without a will. Ali later said that Marciano punched so hard he was sore for days after. Marciano went back into training and bought a toupee. The Marchegiano’s had five more children after Rocco: Alice, Connie, Elizabeth, Louis, and Peter. He even had a role in a movie. It hit Walcott’s jaw with the sound of a baseball bat. He retained his public life, crisscrossing across the country to give speeches, participate in benefits, and conduct business. Pierino’s exposure to mustard gas during combat changed his life, but not his toughness. They had one daughter, but Barbara miscarried when Rocky was away, and wasn’t able to have any more children, although the two did adopt a boy (Rocky Jr.). The man recovered, but never fought again.

(An experiment was performed on Rocky’s punching power. The champion was Jersey Joe Walcott, a ring veteran most experts picked to beat Marciano easily. Yet his retirement years revealed a man who seemed simple, but often was not.

Maybe Rocky ran to avoid an estranged relationship with Barbara. Once, as a joke, the reigning sex symbol, Jayne Mansfield, was smuggled into a room where Marciano sat, alone. His friends said the only thing Rocky was afraid of was being poor. Anthony for her son’s recovery, promising to give up her diamond engagement ring if Rocco recovered. Until Rocco put Brockton on the national map, his hometown was best known for its shoe factories. The pilot and his two passengers were instantly killed. Ali was in retirement too, after having his title stripped for refusing the draft. The sparring film would be spliced together to match the computer outcome of the fight – a closely guarded secret that would not be revealed until “The Superfight” aired in theaters.

Russell Sullivan, Rocky Marciano, The Rock of His Times, 2002, University of Illinois Press, Urbana and Chicago.

Which heavyweight boxing champion in the last century knelt on his knees to pray to St. At the time boxing was a diversion, a way to make a few bucks to help out his family. The computer’s result: Marciano knocked out Ali in the thirteenth round. Rocco was in his twenties, when most fighters hit their peak. Sometimes he would cover his chin and hands with St. Augustine before defending his title, and said: “The biggest thrill I could think of would be an audience with the pope?”

Rocky was an old school Catholic. Rocky was a brawler. He didn’t trust lawyers or accountants, and preferred to deal in cash. Rocky didn’t trust banks, either, so he hid his cash: in the ground, inside toilet tanks, in light fixtures. Rocky kept coming, even after Walcott knocked him down, closed his left eye, and opened cuts on his face that required fourteen stitches to close.

Sources

“In this age of the anti-hero and the non-hero, Rocky Marciano was the hero with whom the mass of Americans could readily identify, the hero who surmounted all difficulties by dint of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Then he was cut from the Chicago Cubs farm system. Even as champion he came to the ring in a robe bearing the colors of BrocktonHigh School (even though he dropped out in the tenth grade). Rocco slept in the living room with the windows open, even in the winter, as if in defiance of his bout with pneumonia.

Not that there is anything particularly Catholic about being a teetotaler.  It’s just that Marciano, though intelligent, was a very simple man who never forgot where he came from.

An investigation into the crash of the Cessna in NewtonIowa cited pilot inexperience as the cause of the crash. The nicest thing about being champ, he said, “is that people like you.”  Everyone but boxing experts, who found Rocky’s style too crude to suffer. Barbara missed Rocky, and drank too much. On those occasions Rocco reached opponents with his right hand, however, they fell down and didn’t get up.

Marciano’s determination in the Walcott fight showed the world the new champion’s character and personality. It is difficult to win a fight when you can’t reach your opponent. Rocky hadn’t fought or trained for fourteen years. He was a near-classic example of the triumph of classic virtues (Boston Herald Traveler, September, 1969).”

After serving as a GI in World War II, Rocco played minor league baseball. His parents loved opera, ate Italian food, and had wine with dinner. At the time many children died of pneumonia, but Rocco eventually recovered, and Lena kept her promise.

He was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano (Mark a-jahn-o) on September 1, 1923, the second son (the first died shortly after childbirth) of Pierino and Lena Marchegiano, first generation Italian immigrants who came to America after the first World War. He even used a coat hanger to stuff money inside curtain rods.

While sportswriters criticized Marciano’s boxing shortcomings, no one criticized his character, as the following quotes show:

Rocky ran from an early age. Lena’s doctor said she could have no more children; this put a fine edge on her concern for Rocco’s health.

His upbringing was steeped in Italian customs and traditions. He was famous, successful, and well thought of.

* * *

He rarely saw his wife and children; or his parents, brothers, and sisters. The pilot landed the plane in a field in Newton, Iowa, and rammed into a lone tree in the middle of the field. As a boy Rocco was preoccupied with his physical condition. Equally unique, Marciano never came out of retirement to challenge subsequent champions, a temptation very few ex-champions have overcome, much less succeeded at.

In 1976 Sylvester Stallone began his “Rocky” franchise. Rocky always apologized, but the fouling continued.. There was bad weather and the plane ran low on gas. He knocked out nine of his early opponents in the first round. His fanaticism about physical conditioning,  along with his determination and punching power, led to an unequalled record for a heavyweight champion: forty-nine professional wins, no defeats, forty-three victories by knockout. He said if the man died he would quit fighting. Marciano spent hours at his opponent’s hospital bed, and in church praying for the man’s life. Yet even after he had enough money Rocky went after more. Or the estrangement may have developed over Rocky’s running, which may have sprung from a preoccupation with money. Rocky Marciano was champion.

Rocky’s last big payday was a computerized fight with Muhammed Ali in 1969

New gambling record: Betting on outcome of Brexit vote

football betting

That’s reflected in financial markets, where stocks and the British pound are relatively buoyant one day before the big event.

© 2016 The Associated Press. It has become increasingly popular, particularly to bet on financial markets.

“If we are going to remain in the E.U., at least I will take compensation,” said Jones, who expects to get 3,000 pounds back in profit in such an event. The referendum also outmatches the 35 million pounds placed on the 2014 World Cup Final.. That surpasses the 40 million pounds placed on the 2012 U.S. He was back in the betting shop this week to place additional wagers on behalf of three American friends.

For Stephen Jones, 55, betting is a form of insurance against disappointment. While the polls show this week’s vote is too close to call, bookies like Betfair are giving the “remain” side a 76 percent probability of winning. “But my big win is to leave the E.U.”

The bookies’ odds have largely been in synch with global financial markets. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The industry is expecting 100 million pounds, or nearly $150 million, to be wagered by the time the result is known in the early hours of Friday.

Betting exchange Betfair says it had taken 45.8 million pounds in wagers on the E.U. presidential race, which was its previous record for a political event. That’s particularly true since pollsters have missed badly in measuring sentiment before some of Britain’s most recent votes, the last general election and the Scottish referendum.

Betfair, bookmakers Ladbrokes and Paddy Power and the Betting Research Unit at Nottingham Business School all estimate that the total value of bets on the vote placed in Britain will reach, and likely exceed, 100 million pounds.

Such betting fever is normally associated with major sports events, with people here habitually placing wagers online or in betting shops on everything from horse races to football matches. Polls suggest it is too close to call, while bookies give the “remain” side a higher chance of winning.

E.U. Spread betting, on the other hand, does not provide a simple win or lose outcome, but can provide payoffs based on the accuracy of the bet. Ladbrokes has seen a tenfold increase in recent years.

LONDON — As if the stakes were not high enough in Britain’s nail-biting vote this week, people are betting record amounts of money on its outcome.

“This is comfortably the biggest political betting event in history and dwarves both the general election and the Scottish referendum,” says Lewis Davey, spokesman for Paddy Power, referring to the Scottish vote on independence last year.

The betting has also gained the attention of global investors as a gauge of the likelihood of an event’s outcome. But the importance, drama and uncertainty that have surrounded this vote have made it a spectator sport in its own right. He intends to vote to leave the E.U., but has placed bets on “remain” to at least get something in case of his side’s defeat.

“This is a historical event, and I want to take part in it,” said Can Zhao, an investment researcher who last week placed a 135-pound ($198) bet on “remain” at a Ladbrokes betting parlor near London’s Kings Cross train station.

Thursday’s vote on whether to leave the European Union, which will have lasting consequences for the country and Europe, is due to break the record as the most bet-upon political event in Britain’s history. All Rights Reserved.

Betting on political events used to be a niche area in the gambling industry but has become more widespread, particularly in Britain. referendum betting already hit a record for a political event days ago for Betfair, bookmaker BetFred and IG, the largest provider of spread betting services.

Betting is his way to get in on the drama because as a foreign citizen from China he will not have a right to vote. Betfair allows people to place wagers against each other rather than setting odds like the traditional bookmakers. vote as of Wednesday and expects a final amount of 50 million pounds

Traditionally, a prank falls flat.

Likewise, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz attempted to inject some levity into the campaign slugfest, tweeting that rival Donald Trump had accepted his invitation for a one-on-one debate, before noting it was intended as a joke.

Restaurant chain Cheesecake Factory unveiled a “nacho cheesecake” dessert on Twitter but quickly assured diners it would not be available to cause heartburn in the real world. The film showed a robot, with no arms or legs, failing at football drills such as running stairs and catching passes.

This year it was the turn of Google, which rolled out a feature called “Mic Drop” that allowed users to send emails and not see the replies.

Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), turned off the feature after users complained that it caused embarrassment in work communications.

As ever, the trick for April Fools’ Day hoaxes was to try to be outlandish, yet faintly plausible.

New Hampshire’s Dartmouth College, which last year began using a robotic tackling dummy it called “MVP” to reduce the number of hits its players absorb during practice, said the robots would be used in games from next season.

There was some naked publicity around in the form of bogus ads.

“Drug interdiction has become more difficult with criminals discovering ever new and smaller areas to conceal drugs,” the department said. “Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs,” Google rued.

National Geographic, following Playboy’s decision this year to stop publishing photos of nude women, said it would no longer degrade animals by showing them naked.

“They’ll compete in the games for us … But he said on Twitter only he was backing “entropy,” or disorganization.

NEW YORK Kittens firing a cannon, a rabbit sniffing for drugs, attempts at humor on the fraught presidential campaign trail and a failed prank by Google competed for attention in the United States on Friday.

The police department in Amherst, New York, unveiled a new crime-fighting scheme, showing an officer with a rabbit on its Facebook page.
